President Joko Widodo officially inaugurated the Ciawi Dam in Bogor, West Java, on Friday. The dam, constructed at a cost of IDR 1.3 trillion, is a crucial part of the government's strategy to mitigate flooding in Jakarta. With a capacity to hold 6.05 million cubic meters of water, the Ciawi Dam, along with the Sukamahi Dam, forms a system designed to regulate water flow in the Ciliwung River, a major waterway that often contributes to flooding in the capital city.
The President expressed his hope that the two dams will significantly reduce the impact of flooding in Jakarta. He noted the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and the importance of infrastructure projects like these to protect communities and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Ciawi Dam is expected to reduce the peak flow of the Ciliwung River, lessening the burden on drainage systems in Jakarta during periods of heavy rainfall. The construction of the dam is a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to address the persistent flooding issues faced by Jakarta, which has historically been vulnerable to inundation due to its location and the confluence of several rivers.
The project highlights the Indonesian government's commitment to investing in infrastructure to bolster the country's resilience to natural disasters and improve the quality of life for its citizens. The Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams represent a long-term investment in flood control and are expected to provide benefits for years to come.
