President Joko Widodo officially inaugurated the Ciawi Dam in Bogor, West Java. This dam, constructed over eight years, is a crucial part of the government's strategy to control flooding in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. It works in conjunction with the Sukamahi Dam, also located in Bogor, to reduce the flow of water into the Ciliwung River, a major contributor to Jakarta's flood problems.
The Ciawi Dam boasts a capacity to hold 6.05 million cubic meters of water, while the Sukamahi Dam has a capacity of 1.68 million cubic meters. Together, these two dams are projected to significantly decrease the peak discharge of the Ciliwung River, offering substantial flood protection to the capital city.
The President highlighted the long and challenging construction process, which began in 2015. He acknowledged the various obstacles encountered during the project's development, emphasizing the dedication and effort required to bring it to completion.
The inauguration ceremony marked a significant milestone in Indonesia's ongoing efforts to improve its infrastructure and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam represent a major investment in flood control and underscore the government's commitment to protecting its citizens from the devastating effects of flooding.
With the completion of these dams, Jakarta's vulnerability to flooding is expected to decrease considerably, offering residents greater peace of mind during the rainy season.
